When I was a freshman in high school, I dated a boy that loved to hunt. He not only hunted in a tree stand, but he thought it was a thrill to spotlight hunt. According to Dawn Laney, author of “Introduction to Hunting” she states that “Spotlighting a deer at night or shooting a duck in the family pond for dinner have been an enduring part of rural life” (par. 3). Laney is correct when she makes this statement: young adults love to hunt when they know it’s illegal. This is mainly due to the thrill and anxiety that illegal acts bring. Spotlight hunting, for example, would entail a group of individuals together in a vehicle that would spotlight an animal and shoot it. Spotlight hunters have no beneficial reason to carry out these actions; they don’t kill animals illegally for survival or beneficial purposes. They hunt this way because it is a thrill, and this is why I believe hunting is an unacceptable interest that should not be legal.Yet, hunting is one of the most popular activities that society participates in today. Individuals of all ages hunt, usually not to kill animals for food and survival, but for many other varying reasons. There are hunters that have the wrong mindset when going on hunting trips; they aren’t hunting for survival purposes, they are hunting to kill the most profitable animal or to have an enjoyable time. These hunters are killing animals for fun. They are killing them to make money or to be highlighted in the nearby newspaper article. They thrive to be admired for their “big shot.” These reasons to why individuals hunt are senseless. I understand there are hunters that hunt for survival needs, however, there are more hunters that hunt for the wrong reasons, including for fun, than those who hunt ethically . Even though there are several reasons as to why hunting is a beneficial activity, hunting is a negative action due to safety, poaching, gaming, extinction, and cruelty.
