Does society think disrespecting animals is acceptable? Is animal cruelty, in some cases, legal? Even though there are many varying cases and different reasons as to why these animals are treated so badly, hunting is a form of animal cruelty. When most people think of animal cruelty, they think of beating a dog or not feeding the cats, but when a wild animal is shot in a body part that is not enough to kill them and the hunter leaves them to suffer horribly in pain, is this not thought of as animal cruelty? There are many hunters who shoot animals for the fun of it, not caring how the animal ends up. These are inane hunters who do not care about the lives of animals. Animals should have more rights that are closer to humans than the opposite . Many animal rights activists feel that animals should have the same rights as humans, including the rights to not be harassed, stressed, stalked, and killed by hunters (Laney, “Preface to ‘Is Hunting a Form of Cruelty to Animals par. 2). In other words, Laney believes that animals should not be messed with or tortured; animals should have the same rights as humans. As animals continue to be hurt and tortured, wildlife begins to be threatened in which then affects subjects I mentioned before including: population, habitats, and species. Although hunting results in animal cruelty, critics will claim that hunters don’t aim to hurt the animal, they aim to kill it; hunters plans are to thoroughly kill the animal, not to just shoot it and watch the animal suffer. Many hunters believe hunting animals makes them appear more masculine, that it shows the animals who is still in charge. Individuals also believe that when a person hunts, they hunt to kill the animal so they can provide food for their families and supplies for themselves. Laney, author of “Is Hunting a Type of Cruelty to Animals” explains that people can't just not hunt, animals would overpopulate. Hunting for food and survival needs is okay (par. 1). I agree that if a person has to hunt to survive, and he or she is aiming primarily to end the animal’s life as quickly as possible, this situation is acceptable to kill an animal. Other than situations like this, hunting is unacceptable because of reasons such as animal cruelty. Society will agree with the author of “Introduction to Hunting: Opposing Viewpoints” when she stated a slogan that reads, “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for treatment.” She is explaining that animals should not be treated with disrespect as n they are when killed for their fur and slaughtered in need for special experiments. These are intolerable actions. Animals all over the world are handled with disrespect, and in society’s mind see hunting as animal cruelty. These actions need to stop, and laws need to be passed to protect these creatures living in our world.
