Hunting causes many negative effects; the most damaging, however, is animal extinction. While many people believe hunting and killing animals is a normal part of life, these people do not realize the consequences on animal populations when killing animals whose number is already limited In the article “Hunting Contributes to Animal Species Extinction” the author states that “Hunting and other wildlife trade is driving species to extinction” (Goodall par. 1).In other words, Goodall is saying that because of hunting, species are dying out. People will argue that animals whose population dips below a certain number will be put on a protected list, and certain animals are protected from getting killed. Extinction is not a problematic topic because each state has laws and bans of certain animals to keep them safe (Batten. 2).What Batten is saying here is that animals are protected from hunting if they are too low in population or they are seen as a national animal. Certain states have restrictions and laws in order to maintain animal population (Batten par. 2). For example, the bald eagle is protected and bans are placed on killings these birds by the government because it is a national bird. While these arguments are true, bans do not stop humans from killing these innocent animals. Just because elephants are under a ban that makes it illegal to kill them, does not mean humanity is going to listen. Furthermore, elephant and other animals parts can make humans an extraordinary amount of money, which is what all humans primarily care about. “Walruses are killed for ivory tusks, robins are killed for Cajun Gumbo, and anhingas are slaughtered for their feathers” (Laney, “Introduction to Hunting: Opposing Viewpoints” par 3). This statement is explaining that animals are killed for the money can be made off of certain animals; a ban or law is not going to stop this from happening. My point is this: humanity needs to come up with a deeper punishment for those who break the bans and laws that protect these animals in order for extinction to come to a stop and for exotic animals to thrive again.
